There are 3 sections within this guide, please go to and use the relevant section:
- Change to an external organisation account (if required) - If you are wanting to change the Multi-Factor authentication for an account that isn't your main organisation.
- First Setup - If you have never setup Multi-Factor Authentication before
Note: The difference between MFA already setup 1 and 2 below, is mainly the visual differences, please select the one that matches your screen.
- MFA already setup 1 - If you have setup Multi-Factor Authentication before and need to add a method or update an existing method
- MFA already setup 2 - If you have setup Multi-Factor Authentication before and need to add a method or update an existing method
Change to an external organisation account (If required)
- https://myaccount.microsoft.com/
- Select the organisation chart icon located in the top right
- Select the organisation you require to make authentication changes to
First Setup
- Open a browser and go to: https://portal.office.com/
- Enter work email address then select Next
- Enter work password then select Sign in
- Select Next
- On your phone, open the App Store
- Search for Microsoft Authenticator and select from the results list
- Select GET
- Double-Click the Side Button to Install. Note: depending on your device model, it may display a different prompt, follow the instructions shown on screen
- Select OPEN
- Select Allow
- Select OK
- Select Scan QR code
- Select OK
- Select Mobile App from drop-down menu then select Receive notifications for verification then select Set up
- Point the phone camera to scan the QR code displayed on your screen (not the example shown here)
- Select Can't scan image?
- On your phone, select Or sign in manually
- Enter the code and URL into your phone. Note please pay careful attention to enter details exactly as shown on screen. If the code provides an error, please retry again to ensure it is entered correctly. If it is correct, it may have timed out, press Back twice and then select Cancel - follow the instructions again starting at Step 5
- Move on to the next step
- Select Can't scan image?
- Select Next
- On your phone select Approve
- Select Next
- Select New Zealand (+64) from drop-down and enter your mobile number then select Done
MFA already setup 1
- Open Chrome or Edge and go to: aka.ms/mfasetup
- Select your work email address or select Use Another account and enter your work email address then select Next
- Enter your password then select Sign In
- Select Overview
- Select UPDATE INFO under Security info
- Select Add sign-in method then select Authenticator app
- On your phone, open the App Store
- Search for Microsoft Authenticator and select from the results list
- Select GET
- Double-Click the Side Button to Install. Note: depending on your device model, it may display a different prompt, follow the instructions shown on screen
- Select OPEN
- Select Allow
- Select OK
- Select Scan QR code
- Select OK
- Select Notify me through app from the drop-down beneath what's your preferred option then select Set up Authenticator app
- Point the phone camera to scan the QR code displayed on your screen (not the example shown here)
- Select Can't scan image?
- On your phone, select Or sign in manually
- Enter the code and URL into your phone. Note please pay careful attention to enter details exactly as shown on screen. If the code provides an error, please retry again to ensure it is entered correctly. If it is correct, it may have timed out, press Back twice and then select Cancel - follow the instructions again starting at Step 5
- Move on to the next step
- On your phone select Approve
- Select Authentication phone check box and enter your mobile number then select Save
- Select Verify preferred option
- On your phone select Approve
MFA already setup 2
- Open Chrome or Edge and go to: aka.ms/mfasetup
- Select your work email address or select Use Another account and enter your work email address then select Next
- Enter your password then select Sign In
- Select Security Info
- On your phone, open the App Store
- Search for Microsoft Authenticator and select from the results list
- Select GET
- Double-Click the Side Button to Install. Note: depending on your device model, it may display a different prompt, follow the instructions shown on screen
- Select OPEN
- Select Allow
- Select OK
- Select Scan QR code
- Select OK
- Select + Add method
- Select Authenticator app from the drop down menu, then select Add
- Select Next
- Select Next
- Point the phone camera to scan the QR code displayed on your screen (not the example shown here)
- Select Can't scan image?
- On your phone, select Or sign in manually
